Netflix Cancels 'Ransom Canyon' After Two Seasons

Netflix has decided not to move forward with a third season of "Ransom Canyon," the Texas romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly. The cancellation comes a few months after the eight-episode second season premiered on July 23.

Netflix has canceled "Ransom Canyon" after two seasons, ending the story of Staten and Quinn.

"Ransom Canyon" is based on the novels by Jodi Thomas and was created by April Blair, who also served as showrunner. The series followed three ranching dynasties in a small Texas town, centered on childhood friends turned star-crossed lovers Staten Kirkland (Duhamel) and Quinn O'Grady (Kelly).

The show's official logline described it this way:

"A heartfelt drama set against the sweeping vistas of Texas Hill Country, Ransom Canyon follows the intersecting lives of deep-rooted families in a town where your neighbors know everyone's business. Season two picks up six months after the events of the first season, with rancher Staten Kirkland (Duhamel) fighting to reclaim his legacy after being unseated as trustee of his family's Double K Ranch, while musician Quinn O'Grady (Kelly) must decide if her heart truly belongs in the small town she once tried to outrun or in the fast-paced world of New York City. Are they star-crossed lovers, or fated to be together? In Ransom Canyon, true love stories are messy, complicated, and always worth the wait."

Falling Viewership Played a Role

The series was already on shaky ground before Season 2 arrived. Following a respectable but not massive first season, the show was renewed more than two months after its Season 1 premiere, with a reduced episode order of eight (down from ten) and a supporting cast shakeup.

Season 2 logged 4.1 million views in its first week, down 43% from Season 1's opening week of 7.2 million views. Season 1 had spent four weeks in Netflix's weekly Top 10, while Season 2 fell off the list after just three weeks.

Other Netflix sophomore series with similar or larger year-to-year premiere week viewership drops managed to secure third seasons, including Running Point (-43%), The Four Seasons (-63%), The Gentlemen (-45%), Avatar: The Last Airbender (-59%) and A Good Girl's Guide To Murder (-76%). Other Netflix shows recently renewed include Tires, My Life With the Walter Boys, Free Bert and Big Mistakes.

How Season 2 Ended

Quinn returned from New York with a new boyfriend, Oliver (Ben Robson), at the start of Season 2, but had broken up with him and reunited with Staten by the finale. With her mother (Patricia Clarkson) selling their family farmhouse, Quinn agreed to move in with Staten at the Double K Ranch.

Asked about a potential wedding for the couple, Minka Kelly told TVLine:

"I think we first have to see if they're capable of domesticated life together."

She added that the show would need to explore new questions for the pair: "Now you've gotten everything you wanted, but can you handle it? Do you still choose each other after seeing the worst in each other? What does that all look like?"

Elsewhere in the finale, Kit (Casey W. Johnson) prepared to leave town for a job in Wyoming before Lucas (Garrett Wareing) convinced Lauren (Lizzy Greene) to go after him, and Ellie (Marianly Tejada) asked Yancy (Jack Schumacher) to leave after giving birth to their daughter, unsure whether she could trust him.

The finale also set up a possible love triangle involving Ellie and left the door open for a larger role for Staten's half-brother Levi, played by Steve Howey, who appeared in Season 2. Duhamel told TVLine he'd "love to see [Levi] come back and see what kind of relationship happens from there," adding: "Levi always felt like an outsider, so I'd be very curious to see how he handles that. After all these years, would you try to acclimate to the family, or would you try to rebel against it?"

Impact on New Mexico Production

The cancellation also affects hundreds of New Mexico residents who worked on the show. When Season 2 filming began in 2025, New Mexico Film reported the production hired more than 700 locals, including 380 crew members, 40 principal actors and 300 background actors.

Steve Graham, director of the New Mexico Film Office, said at the time:

"The return of Ransom Canyon for its second season is a powerful statement about our state's production capabilities. Netflix's continued partnership proves that our combination of a skilled workforce, diverse locations, and a strong partnership makes New Mexico an ideal home for long-term series production. We're proud to have them back."

The cast also included Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Casey W. Johnson, Philip Winchester and Justin Johnson Cortez. April Blair executive-produced alongside Duhamel and Kelly, along with Dan Angel, Bradley Gardner, Joe Fazzio, Amanda Marsalis, Adam Milch, Kelli Breslin and Neil Reynolds.
