Amazon Prime Refunds Expand: Up to $200 Per Person

Millions more Amazon Prime customers could soon get money back. They will not have to fill out a single form to receive it. A new court-approved order makes the Amazon Prime refund program bigger and faster.

What changed in the refund order

A federal court this week approved a joint request from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Amazon. The new order speeds up refunds and widens who can get them.

  • More customers now qualify.
  • The maximum total payment rises from $51 to $200.
  • All future payments are sent automatically.

Background on the settlement

In September 2025, Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement. The government said Amazon signed up millions of people for Prime without their consent. It also said Amazon made the cancellation process hard. Amazon denied any wrongdoing.

The deal has two parts. Amazon pays a $1 billion civil penalty. It must also pay up to $1.5 billion in refunds to harmed customers. As of September 2026, Amazon has paid out more than $845 million.

Who can get a refund now

The first refunds, up to $51, went to people who used fewer than 10 Prime benefits in a one-year period. Under the new order, people who used between 11 and 20 benefits in a one-year period now qualify too.

Automatic payments to this new group start on October 1, 2026. You do not need to file a claim, answer a notice, or complete any paperwork. Payments will arrive in one of three ways:

  • Venmo
  • PayPal
  • A mailed check

A second payment of up to $149

There is also a backup round of payments. Suppose the amount of accepted refunds has not reached the required level by February 2027. Amazon will then send extra money to people who already received a refund.

These customers can get an additional $149, which brings their total to $200. This round starts by April 2027. It will also be paid automatically.

Watch out for scams

Amazon runs the refund program. The FTC is not contacting people about these refunds. If someone says they are from the FTC, it is likely a scam. Amazon will never ask you to pay money to get a refund.

Be careful with any message that asks for money or bank details. When in doubt, do not respond.

What it means for you

  • No claim needed: If you qualify, the payment comes to you automatically.

  • Stay safe: Never pay a fee or share banking details to "unlock" a refund.
